The real-world challenge was to prototype new services and products utilizing renewable materials. The final outcome was a prototype of an augmented reality game which will enable children to understand the carbon cycle and the impact that their choices will have on the future of our planet.

Experimental Plastic

Partnering with Coca-Cola Finland

The real-world challenge gave design students total freedom to experiment with PE-HD plastic with red Coca-Cola crates using multiple tools and methods. The material experimention created collection of 200 samples which will be shared as open source later in the Autumn 2017. The students transformed used crates into beautiful material experiments and objects varying from video installation and audio to usable artefacts. The collaboration generated a open-source book of 100 samples and related articles. The outcomes are exhibited as part of Helsinki Design Week 2017.

Print & Surface Design

The real-world challenge was to design a print and surface design collection for a specific customer group with six different suggestions. As part of the collaboration, selected students were awarded fully paid internships at H&M HQ in Stockholm.

HSL - passanger experience design

The real-world challenge was to explore and develop passanger experience in the Helsinki region transport via visual communication design. Students showcased renewed system and service design for HSL including detailed maps and timetables.

Empowering Hospital Clowns

Partnering with Finnish Hospital Clowns Association

The real-world challenge was to elevate the professional status of the hospital clowns, by unifying their overall appearance with costumes that function both as workwear, and as performance costume in their demansing circumstances. Additionally, each costume had to maintain and clarify the identity and backstory that each clown has created for their character.

This unique project was funded by the Finnish Culture Foundation and Aalto ARTS Costume Programme and partially sponsored by Marimekko. Costumes were created in the premises of Sankariliiga and Aalto Studios Costume Studio. Several Costume Programme Alumni’s were employed through the project.

Loud - Form Exploration Project

The real-world challenge was to explore new solutions for experiencing digital music in the home environment. Through material testing and research on contemporary design and aesthetics, students experimented functional prototypes with brave visions of what sophisticated and contemporary audio products can be. Project outcomes have been exhibited in number of galleries and spaces.
